Korea | Partial Revision of Food Code (No. 2019-31)
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea (MFDS) announced partial revisions for the "Specifications and Standards of Food" (hereafter referred to as the "Food Code") under notification no. 2019-31 on Apr 26, 2019.
Reasons for revision
To revise the standards of radioactive iodine and caesium in food, and to establish and revise the maximum residue limits (MRLs) and test methods for pesticides used domestically and abroad to supply safe food to the public.
Main Revisions
1) Revision of standard of food subject to radioactivity control
a) There is a need to reinforce the safety management of radioactive caesium and iodine.
b) Revision of standards of iodine and caesium.
c) Reinforcement of the safety standards for domestic and international food by strengthening the radiation standard
2) Establishment and revision of MRLs in agricultural products
a) Establishment and revision of relevant standards for the safety management of agricultural chemicals registered as new or officially registered in the “Pesticide Control Act” and application of establishment of MRLs for imported agricultural products.
b) Establishment and revision of 76 MRLs such as Iminoctadine.
c) Safe provision of food to the Korean citizens by reasonably establishing and revising MRLs for agricultural products.
3) Establishment of general analytical methods
a) There is a need to establish analytical methods according to the newly established MRLs.
b) Establishment of 4 analytical methods such as Quinoxyfen in agricultural products.
c) Safe provision of food to the Korean citizens by scientifically establishing new analytical methods.
