Korea | Partial Revision of Food Additives Code (No. 2018-84)
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea (MFDS) announced partial revisions for the "Specifications and Standards of Food Additives (hereafter referred to as the "Food Additives Code") under notification no. 2018-84 on Nov 1, 2018.
Main Revisions
The MFDS announced the partial revision of the Food Additives Code in order to clarify the basis for the determination of additives derived from natural foods; to designate "Peroxyacetic Acid" as a disinfectant for the purpose of improving food hygiene; to delete the acidity standard of "Koji" so that various foods can be developed; to secure the safety of infant food; and harmonize the standards of use for 14 food additives such as "Guar Gum" and so on with international standards.
Main contents of Revision
Establishment of "Regulation on the recognition of natural origin of food additives"
1) Necessity to clarify the basis for recognition of food additives naturally derived from the manufacturing process of food ingredients or fermentation etc.
2) Establishment of a basis for the recognition of food additives from natural origin (Ⅰ. 3. 6)).
3) Establishment of regulations on recognition of food additives from natural origin (Table 4).
4) Invigoration of related industries through the clarification of natural origin criteria and improvement of regulation.
Establishment of specifications and standards for "Peroxyacetic Acid"
1) Necessity to establish regulations for safe and effective disinfectants according to the food type.
2) Establishment of specifications and standards for "Peroxyacetic acid" such that it can be used as a disinfectant for food (Ⅱ. 4. 가., II. 5. 가. Peroxyacetic Acid).
3) Improvement of food hygiene level by using disinfectant suitable for food production, manufacturing and processing.
Revision of compositional standard of "Koji"
1) Necessity to amend acidity standard to make various strains suitable for the manufacturing of granular koji in Koji.
2) Deletion of the acidity standard in the composition standard of "Koji" ((Ⅱ. 4. 가. "Koji").
3) Invigoration of food industry by developing various products.
Revision of standards of use for 14 items such as "Guar Gum" used in infant food
1) Necessity to establish the standards for the amount of food additives allowed for use in infant food to ensure safety management and harmony with international standards.
2) Establishment of the maximum limits of 14 items such as "Guar Gum" (Ⅱ. 5. 다. preparatory oil, infant formula, growth formula, cereal formula, other food for infants and young children, special formula food for infants and young children)
3) Improve health of infants and young children by strengthening safety management
