Korea | Proposed Partial Revision of Labeling Standards For Health Functional Food (No. 2018-144)
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea (MFDS) has announced a draft to revise the Labeling Standards for Health Functional Food (hereafter referred to as 'the Standard') (No. 2018-144) as of 5 April, 2018.
Reason for revision
Health functional food products are often small in size and have a small display area so it is difficult to create and enclose product inserts due to the nature of the bottles or plastics used based on the current standards which requires the use of font size 10 and above. The MFDS intends to improve the regulation to become more rational by allowing exceptions to the the applicable font size when the containers and packaging of such health functional food products are small.
Further, the 'Gluten Free' label is a mark for consumer safety, so the MFDS intends to allow such labeling for consumers who need to limit their gluten intake.
Main contents
Amendment of Exemption Regulation for Display Font Size of Health Functional Food (Draft Article 5 (3) of the Standard).
Mandatory labeling items that should be displayed collectively in containers/ packages for each minimum sales unit can be displayed in a size smaller than font size 10. In this case, the surface area for the display of information other than the main labeling requirements shall be equal to or larger than the area equivalent to the main display surface, and only the matters specified in the respective items of Article 4 of the Standard shall be displayed.
'Gluten-Free' Labeling (Article 9 of the Standard)
The 'Gluten Free' label is a mark for consumer safety, so the MFDS intends to allow such labeling for consumers who need to limit their gluten intake.
